The Minimalist Drinker in Mutineer Magazine

    Rum Old Fashioned

The latest issue of Mutineer Magazine includes a spirits feature written by a fun-loving, booze-swilling penguin. I was at once joyous and befuddled to see that my article went through the editorial process with minimal editing, leaving in all the brand recommendations and geek-out cultural references – everything from Lord of the Rings to Over the Top.

How to Make Great Cocktails with Only a Few Ingredients

The story focuses on building up a Fallout-era bar, not with more booze, but with a few simple items from the grocery store. Such as:

    • Citrus
    • Simple syrup
    • Mint
    • Bitters

A few of my original potions and snapshots found their way into the article, and I bet even the 18th level bibulous wizards of the cocktail world may glean a few runes from it to put in their next spell. Here’s one of the recipes that finds its way onto my cantrip list more often than most:

    Rum Old Fashioned

    • 2oz rum (your favorite, preferably aged – try Appleton Extra, El Dorado 15, Ron Zacapa, Mount Gay XO)
    • 1/4oz simple syrup (or less if you like)
    • 1 dash Angostura bitters (Fee’s and Bitter Truth aromatic work well here too)
    • orange twist, for garnish

Pour ingredients over a few cubes of ice in your favorite rocks glass. Stir for about thirty seconds and spritz the oils from the orange peel on top.

The Rum Old Fashioned I had in London were great and used El Dorado 15 as well as different kind of bitters such as leather and tobacco bitters, they were superb!

I’ve made Rum Old Fashioned at home with El Dorado 15 and Angostura bitters and it was pretty good. I tried the cocktail with lighter style rums which in my opinion did not work. El Dorado 15 gives such great depth and certain kind of “heavyness” to the cocktail others just can’t match.

Now, where to find leather and tobacco bitters…

I don’t usually mix old rums but in this case I shall make an exception.

You’d better get out the sweater with the leather elbow patches, Rick- you’re an AUTHOR!

      Many congratulations!

Tatu, those leather and tobacco bitters are easy to make, you steam a cigar and soak pieces from it with spices,(i tried to make them –

These bitters were made for a cocktail contest in the UK and the “leather” part was actually a leather glove placed beside the cocktail.

The bitters really gets much tobacco flavour so use very little of it.Its not really real bitters, its a sort of instant-bitters.

Kaiser Penguin is a cocktail blog featuring original recipes, homemade ingredients, classic cocktails, and tiki drinks.

Why on Earth did you name your blog “Kaiser Penguin?”

It is a well-known fact that penguins are members of high society and enjoy fine cocktails. Our very own kaiser penguin would like me to mention that he also enjoys various treats from the sea.
