TDN Float Wrap-Up

Thursday Drink Night - two lovely people sharing drink and conversation over the net

Upcoming TDN – Chartreuse

Oh, the lure of Chartreuse. Herbs, both aromatic and sweet, embracing all of your senses and whisking you on a dance in the trees with fairies and monks. It’s green hue brings thoughts of Christmas, mistletoe, and the hearth. For me, Chartreuse is a Yuletide spirit, and as long as my Christmas tree is up, it will find its way into more than a few of the cocktails I pour this season. (ed. note: my Christmas tree was up until May last year) Whether green or yellow, we’ll be mixing up cocktails with Chartreuse this Thursday, so pick up up some and join us at 7pm EST in the chatroom.

TDN Float Wrap-Up

What I expected from last week’s TDN was a zealous enclave of pith-toting rum swizzlers who floated every drink with overproof rum. When in fact, the story was… well, it was pretty much like that.

Winning Cocktail

Tiare from A Mountain of Crushed Ice had the winning cocktail. It was a delicious combination of wonderful rums and a float of one of my favorite spirits…

Demerara Bomb #2

  • 3oz El Dorado Rum Cream (sub Castries),
  • 1oz Lemon Hart 151
  • 1oz El Dorado 12
  • 1 oz El Dorado 15
  • 1/4oz Fernet Branca, floated

Shake all but the lovely Fernet Branca with cracked ice, and strain into a chilled goblet of victory. Float the Fernet Branca with care.

Yeah, i think the Dem Bomb #2 was the best, but a very close second was the Jamaican Fury (maybe if i had a vanilla bean– well who knows?). Also, on the subject of the Demerara Bomb#2 . . i would say– if you don’t have the El Dorado Rum Cream, you should find it… the stuff is preposterously good!! and if i were going to sub i would use Cruzan Rum Cream, and not the Castries (which is also an amazingly delicious rum cream– but the peanuts… maybe i should try this substitution before i say anything else..)

Just wondering if you’re jigger-folks or free-pourers. I free pour at work, but tend to use a jigger at home.

I was totally surprised that i won this TDN, how fun!

Jennifer,i only bartend very occasionally at private company parties and i`m not trained to freepour in such a way that i can bring along consistent and rightly measured drinks so use jigger.

When i am making a drink where the proportions matter i wont ‘free pour’.
Most of them i make for myself however don’t count, and i’m not behind the stick no more:( (except corporate/private bookings)

Forrest, you should definitely try the Dem Rum Bomb #2 with Castries. I have never seen the El Dorado Cream anywhere…
