MxMo Brandy – Pendennis

Pendennis

Marleigh, from over at SLOSHED! is hosting this fine edition of Mixology Monday. After trying a plethora of brandy cocktails and whipping up a couple of new tiki recipes, I decided to fall back on an old favorite.

MxMo - Brandy
Vintage Spirits and Forgotten Cocktails by Dr. Cocktail was one of the first cocktail books that found its way to my bookshelf. I had nearly none of the spirits, syrups, bitters, or other strange ingredients that filled its pages, but I was determined to acquire them. Now, over a year and a half later, I have most of the ingredients, but this still remains one of my favorite cocktails from the book.

I often make this cocktail when I’m feeling uninspired. It’s not the quintessential potion by any means, but it is one of the first drinks I ever mentioned on the pages of Kaiser Penguin.

Pendennis

  • 2oz gin (tried with both Plymouth and Death’s Door)
  • 1oz apricot brandy (used Marie Brizard Apry)
  • 3/4oz lime juice
  • 3 dashes Peychaud bitters

Shake with ice and strain into a chilled cocktail glass.

Flavor

The Pendennis is a touch sweet, but in a good way with the apricot taming the gin and the bitters giving it a kick. The lime does a fine job of making sure the syrupy brandy doesn’t take over and enter cloying territory.

A KP post without a tiki drink? I think not.

Here’s a brandy tiki cocktail I crafted. I’d love some testers to help me improve the formula!

Pearl Brandy

  • 1 1/2oz cognac
  • 1/2oz gold Puerto Rican rum
  • 1/2oz dark Jamaican rum
  • 1/4oz 151-proof Demerara
  • 3/4oz lime juice
  • 3/4oz orange juice
  • 1oz Pearl Diver’s mix
  • 1 dash cinnamon syrup

Blend with 6oz crushed ice and pour into your favorite, angry tiki mug.

KP Questions

  1. Do you have a favorite apricot brandy that’s not Marie Brizard?
  2. Who has actually made Pearl Diver’s mix?

Sorry to answer a question with a question, but I’ve had my eye on the Rothman & Winter Apricot. Anybody try this? (I’m hoping it’s good cuz like their crème de violette OK. Made some nice Blue Moons.)

As for old brandy standbys, my housemate and I had good the old Sidecar tonight with Courvoisier and Cointreau. So rich and elegant, and chased all worries away.

Rick, is the Death’s Door any good? This is the first I’ve heard of it.

And since I just got Sippin’ Safari for Christmas, I may have to take a stab at that Pearl Diver’s mix.

  4. Just a suggestion–perhaps start entering announcements of Mixology Mondays at ismyblogburning.com? I keep forgetting about them and I’m sure others would love to participate. Thanks and your Pendennis looks yum!

About

Kaiser Penguin is a cocktail blog featuring original recipes, homemade ingredients, classic cocktails, and tiki drinks.

Why on Earth did you name your blog “Kaiser Penguin?”

It is a well-known fact that penguins are members of high society and enjoy fine cocktails. Our very own kaiser penguin would like me to mention that he also enjoys various treats from the sea.
