Tales of the Tiki Dinner

Tales of the Tiki Cocktail

For those of you last minute planners out there, I’d like to heartily recommend immediately booking a flight to New Orleans for this weekend. Ann from Tales of the Cocktail sent me the menu for the evening, and it is mouthwatering.

Some Highlights

  • BALI BALI (WELCOME COCKTAIL) – Old New Orleans Rum, Citrus juices, Falernum (A “lost” recipe from the Bali Hai on Pontchartrain Beach, circa 1960)
  • GINGER AND SESAME U-10 DIVER SEA SCALLOP with a Louisiana Coconut-Crawfish Cake and a Cilantro-Jalapen?o-Lime Dressing
  • NUI NUI – Cruzan Estate Rum, Pimento Liqueur, Vanilla CordiOrange & Lime Juice, Cinnamon Syrup (this is a personal favorite of KP)
  • NIMAN RANCH PORK BONE-IN RIBEYE and BRAISED PORK BELLY with Pork Fried Rice, Cashew Pea Pods, Sweet & Sour House-Made Pickled Vegetables and a 5-Spice-Mango Barbeque Sauce
  • MISSIONARY’S DOWNFALL – Cruzan Estate Rum, Peach Brandy, Fresh Mint, Pineapple, Lime Juice

The event is this Friday evening. At $179, it’s too hard to pass up. For those of who don’t mind the extra cost of a plane flight or live nearby, you should totally attend, even if it’s just to chat it up with the Bum, who will be whipping up exotic cocktails all evening.

Buy tickets here.

For hooking up with other tikiphiles planning to attend and for the full menu, head on over to Tiki Central. And if you go, post about the event here!

    Oh man, if I wasn’t having a baby any day now… :-)

Babies like tiki masks, don’t they?

Those Tales of the Cocktail folks seem to put on amazing events – someday maybe I can make the long trek.

I saw on Jeff Berry’s blog that there’s also an event on Monday evening at the Old New Orleans Rum distillery – probably worth staying over for.

Has anyone else tasted that Old New Orleans rum? My dad is from the tiki generation and loves his rum, so I always bring him bottles of different rums at Christmastime. I picked up a bottle of the Old New Orleans rum in Los Angeles – we were kind of stunned when we opened it, as it smells and tastes like bourbon. I know they age the rum in old bourbon barrels, but man, it did not taste like rum. It was a good flavor, but just not rum.

I never got around to mixing with it, so maybe that bourbon flavor changes in a drink.

The Old New Orleans rum is GREAT. I actually haven’t done anything but mix it. I’ll give it a try tonight by itself and see how it fares. I very much enjoy it in the Nui Nui, which calls for 2oz of amber Virgin Islands rum.

    Anyone planning on going?

  4. I’d love to (the menu looks amazing) but, alas, can’t tear myself away. Another time.

$179 for food imported from California and drinks I can mix myself? No thanks. Though it might be worth the price of admission to gab with the Beachbum.

It’s a shame I missed this event, as I know it would’ve been right up my street and the menu sounds very interesting.
