Live Blogging Thursday Drink Night
Over the course of the next eight or so hours, cocktail bloggers, readers, and mixologists of various sorts will be whipping up new potions in the Mixoloseum Chat Room (there are already a bunch of us in there). As we finalize brand new cocktails throughout the evening, I’ll be posting them here on Kaiser Penguin.
Old Gold
- 1 1/2oz El Dorado 12 (sub Lemon Hart 80)
- 1/2oz Clement VSOP (sub Mount Gay Extra Old)
- 1/2oz Cointreau
- 3/4oz Ginger Syrup
- 3/4oz Grapefruit juice (1:1 white and red, if available)
- 2 dash Fees Bitters
- 2 drops Vanilla Extract
- 2 drops Don’s Spices #2 (1:1 vanilla syrup and pimento dram)
Mix with 6 oz crushed ice in top-down, and pour into a small Hurricane glass (sub chimney). Garnish with a dash of Cinnamon and piece of Candied Ginger.

Blair pretty much knocked us out of the water with this one. How did he even make this up? No one else had all of the ingredients, even with substitution. That said, it is a fine drink, surely. Blair is going to putting up a post about it soon, so look for it!
Maluna Hai
- 1 1/2oz El Dorado 12 (sub Lemon Hart 80)
- 1oz Grapefruit juice (1:1 white and red, if available)
- 1/2oz lime juice
- 1/4oz pimento dram (used St. Elizabeth Allspice which is usually a bit stronger than the homemade variety)
- 1/2oz orgeat (homemade)
- 1/4oz simple syrup
- 1 dash Angostura bitters
- 1 dash orange curacao
Shake with crushed ice and donate to your favorite happy mug.

Blair offered up a second tiki potion to pretty much secure our doom this evening (in a good way). It was crazy sweet before adding in the 1/2oz lime juice. Blair just posted this lovely beast.
- 2oz applejack (used Laird’s bonded)
- 1oz Navan vanilla liqueur
- 1/2oz Chartreuse
- 1oz lime juice
Shake with cracked ice and strain into a chilled cocktail glass.

- 2oz Mount Gay XO
- 1/2oz Drambuie
- 1/4oz Fernet Branca
Stir with crushed ice and strain into a chilled cocktail glass.

This tastes like Mint Chocolate Chip Ice Cream. Not in a bad way… I think. Matt, from Rum Dood had the following suggestion to improve it: “Try upping the rum to 4oz and dropping the other crap.”
Black River Sidecar
- 1 1/2oz cognac
- 3/4oz lemon juice
- 1/4oz Pimento Dram
- 1t agave nectar
Shake with cracked ice and strain into a chilled cocktail glass.

Can’t Go Wrong
- 2oz bourbon
- 1/2oz absinthe (used Mata Hari)
- 1/2oz Benedictine (or, surprisingly, simple syrup)
- 2 dashes Angostura bitters
Swizzle like a fairy.

Mrs. Howell’s Spicy Side
- 1 1/2oz light PR rum
- 3/4oz spiced rum (or gold and throw in random crushed christmas spices)
- 1oz orange curacao
- 3/4oz lemon juice
- 1/2oz ginger syrup 1T ginger chopped and 1/2oz simple syrup
- 1/4oz pimento dram
- 1/4oz orgeat
Shake the hell out of it, and strain into a goblet glistening with crushed ice.

- 1oz absinthe
- 1/2oz lime juice

After we hit 20 cocktail fiends in the chat room, we needed something to bring us all back together. Michele provided the tool, and we all toasted to good friends and lots of pompous booze.
Paul’s House Manhattan
- 2oz Rittenhouse bonded
- 3/4oz Carpano Antica
- 2 dashes Bitter Truth JT Decanter Bitters
- 2 dashes absinthe
Stir like a proper statesmen and strain into an upright cocktail glass.

This was a blast! Looking forward to the next one, and already figuring out what ingredients I need to purchase to start catching up to the rest of you.
Tons of fun. Will be better stocked next time. (Although I do support the idea of at least a general theme. There are only so many bottles that those of us relative newcomers can buy each week.)
And for the record, in case it gets lost in the fray, the ‘Revolutionary Cocktail’, which made it’s debut sometime before the Michelle put the (Lime) Hammer down.

I was bummed I had to leave early, but glad I got to stay for a few drinks before disappearing for dinner.
I was especially enamored of the Black River Sidecar. Spicy, tasty, richy goodness.
Fun as all hell. I’ll keep tweaking that demerara cream thing and perhaps have it ready for next Thursday!
