Remixed: Von Kaiser

Von Kaiser

Riffing on the Aurora Bora Borealis proved to be a challenging quest. And one so fraught with peril I had to dig out my dusty game cocktail genie to grant me more lives. Orange, orgeat, and coconut cream seem to be the best of friends, but push one even the tiniest bit the wrong way, and you’re left with an orange julius cough drop of horror.

Von Kaiser

  • 1oz Coruba
  • 1oz Oronoco
  • 1oz Appleton V/X
  • 1t Super Punch
  • 1oz lemon juice
  • 1/2oz orange juice
  • 1/2oz cream of coconut
  • 1/4oz orgeat syrup
  • lemon twist, for garnish

Shake (with ice) like you’re about to be TKO’d by Glass Joe in the first round. Strain into a saucer, fill with crushed ice, and garnish while holding down select.

The lure of Super Punch has been strong ever since I dreamed up the Star Power. Though I’ve learned much since then: thou shalt treat this Christmas fruitcake bomb as the hippopotamus of flavor it is. Use it in dash or teaspoon quantities and it augments the holiday-factor in nearly any libation. Use more than a quarter ounce or so and the only heart you’ll be warming is Scrooge’s.

The most baffling taste of chocolate lingers delicately on your tongue after each sip, like some handsome ghoul behind your bed curtains – most assuredly the strange combination of orgeat and Super Punch at work.

KP Question

  • What’s the weirdest ingredient you’ve put into a tiki drink?

I feel like, in answer to the question, the answer is going to be “Sauternes” from that Stuft Shirt Mai Tai in _Remixed_. I can’t imagine anything weirder than that, but I can’t wait to hear what others have added!

As for drinks I’ve actually made (or ever would actually made), I was playing around w/ Lei Lana Volcano variation that had Batavia Arrack & coconut rum in it. Also, liquid smoke.

Scotch?!? I don’t see that in your recipe. . . What am I missing?

As for odd tiki/tropical frink ingredients, one I use in a favorite Jamaican rum punch is that super thick and totally artificial Grace Jamaican strawberry flavored syrup. A little bit tossed into a punch with Coruba and J Wray, lime, passionfruit and orange juices, and pimento dram and you’re ready to roll.

Hm–Super Punch is pretty weird. Don’t think I can top that one. I dunno–blue curacao is pretty strange, but I’m guessing that’s not what you mean.

“Handsome ghoul behind your bed curtains”? Not sure that’s a good thing. Well, wait–no, not a good thing.

Off the topic of the weirdest ingredient thread for a moment, i just wanted to tap Rick or any of the other folks here’s expertise regarding Cream Of Coconut, as the ingredients in Coco Lopez are pretty damn alarming. Has anyone here experimented with some of the more natural unsweetened coconut creams like Kara or Savoy or the coconut cream concentrates from Tropical Traditions? Thanks from a longtime lurker!

Hi Eric. I just use coconut milk (like for cooking) and sweeten it with syrup.
