Tales of the Cocktail - Monday Night

Knowing that I would be assaulted this whole week by fine dining and complex, crazy cocktails, I wanted to start off on the right foot. That lead me to Yo Mama’s Bar and Grill, a small nook on St. Peter. Sparsely populated, I sat at the bar and opened the menu. That […]

Painkiller

I want to be a hearty, bearded sailor who’s charge is managing the money and doling out rum and grub. Luckily, my dreams are not too far off, as these were common duties of the ship’s purser. And though this sounds glamorous, the purser often had a bad lot, rarely ending up wealthy […]

Dark ‘n Stormy Night

Adam, Kaiser Penguin’s Forbidden Island correspondent, reports in on Dark ‘n Stormy Night. (I want to be Kaiser Penguin’s FI correspondent! — Rick)
Tiki-mecca Forbidden Island recently hosted this event as part of their glee-inducing, month-long RUMFEST event. It was hosted by Gosling’s, and in addition to the evening’s namesake (their signature drink), Gosling’s Old Rum […]

MxMo Brandy - Pendennis

Marleigh, from over at SLOSHED! is hosting this fine edition of Mixology Monday. After trying a plethora of brandy cocktails and whipping up a couple of new tiki recipes, I decided to fall back on an old favorite.

Vintage Spirits and Forgotten Cocktails by Dr. Cocktail was one of the first cocktail books that found its […]

Test Pilot - Revisited

I am totally amazed how the Test Pilot has evolved since my post about it over a year ago. The first time I made it, I used the following recipe:

Test Pilot

1/2oz lime juice
1/2oz falernum
1/2oz Cointreau
1 dash Angostura bitters
1/8t Pernod
3/4oz light Puerto Rican rum
1 1/2oz dark Jamaican rum

Blend with 1c crushed ice for 5 seconds, […]

Jet Pilot

My goal this post is to motivate those of you who haven’t made falernum or cinnamon syrup to do so. Neither takes the obligatory month and a half like pimento dram. In fact, if you were to start a batch of each after work on Friday, you’d be sipping this cocktail Saturday evening.
Cinnamon […]

Tales of the Cocktail - Friday and Saturday - Update 2

Saturday Recap
12:01am - Gretchen and I were sitting in the lobby of Hotel Monteleone eating awesome pralines from the Southern Candy Makers. More importantly, there was a peanut butter-filled Ritz cracker sandwich coated entirely in bittersweet chocolate. Before long, Chuck and Wesley showed up and joined us in the comfy seats. The […]

Are You A Lurker?

I am a lurker. And according to my stats, 90% of you are too. How do you know if you’re a lurker?
Let us imagine together …

You are sitting at your computer sipping a tasty concoction, one of your standbys, and going through your list of bookmarked cocktail blogs. You scan headlines looking […]

Coronado Luau Special

After enjoying the Coronado Luau Special for the first time at Forbidden Island, I knew I must add it to my overwhelming collection of tiki drinks that make up the summer schedule. I rushed home and eagerly flipped through the citrus-stained and rum-marked pages of Berry’s books for the recipe …
I must pause to […]

Forbidden Island

Nearing our destination, nestled deep within residential Alameda, Adam looked into the rear-view mirror. There was a glint in his eyes, not too unlike the shimmer of flaming rum-soaked croutons. He cracked a smile, clearly knowing the answer to the question he was about to ask. “Can you feel it?”
I could. […]
