Recipe Comparison - Scorpion Bowl

After completing this recipe comparison, I have come to many conclusions, but there is one that is indisputable. I will -never- get scurvy.

The Joy of Mixology

2oz light rum (used Cruzan)
1/2oz brandy (used Salignac)
2oz orange juice
3/4oz lemon juice
1/2oz orgeat (used homemade)
1/2oz 151-proof rum (used Lemon Hart)

Shake with ice and strain into an ice-filled glass.
The Joy [...]

Are You a Lurker?

It’s de-lurking day again! The day where all you shy, non-commenting imbibers get to introduce yourself and, if lucky, win yourself something. Last year we had an overwhelming number of new posters poking their heads out from behind the tiki bar. Can we do better this year?
How do you know if you’re a [...]

Blog Action Day

[ed. A question about green cocktails was posed during one of the panels at Rum Fest yesterday which just happened to coincide with Blog Action Day, so I've consulted our resident environmentally friendly forest creature and connoisseur of fine exotic cocktails, Adam. Adam provided the deliciously green photo above as well.]
Yesterday was Blog Action Day, [...]

Tales of the Cocktail - Friday and Saturday - Update 2

Saturday Recap
12:01am - Gretchen and I were sitting in the lobby of Hotel Monteleone eating awesome pralines from the Southern Candy Makers. More importantly, there was a peanut butter-filled Ritz cracker sandwich coated entirely in bittersweet chocolate. Before long, Chuck and Wesley showed up and joined us in the comfy seats. The [...]

Coronado Luau Special

After enjoying the Coronado Luau Special for the first time at Forbidden Island, I knew I must add it to my overwhelming collection of tiki drinks that make up the summer schedule. I rushed home and eagerly flipped through the citrus-stained and rum-marked pages of Berry’s books for the recipe …
I must pause to [...]

Tiki Ingredients

Winter’s icy scepter has finally made its killing stroke. The wind chill brought the temperature down to -18F today. Is it wrong that all I can think about is if I can get my ice down to that temperature so I can crush it for tiki drinks?
Truth be told, the tiki gods have [...]

Recipe Comparison - The Fog Cutter

According to Dr. Cocktail there is a bit of controversy over who exactly created the Fog Cutter. Tony Ramos remembers it from Edna Fogcutter’s, where it was the signature drink, but everyone else I’ve come across gives the credit to Trader Vic. You’ll see both of their recipes among many others compared below.
This [...]

Waikikian

Beachbum Berry’s Grog Log arrived at my doorstep today along with the Old Waldorf-Astoria Bar Book, and after five minutes of leafing through each, I wish I had picked up the Triple Play containing all of Jeff’s tiki books. Without delving too much into the layout or contents of this tikian tome, which [...]

Recipe Comparison - Mai Tai

The last bit of snow has melted, and the temperatures have begun their gradual climb into spring, where it will no doubt get cold and snow again. But in hopes that winter has finally averted its icy gaze, I have begun to stock up on rum. Just like food, cocktails seem to situate [...]

Fee Brothers - Syrup and Bitter Tasting

I must say, I don’t think I’ve experienced better customer service from a company in a long while. My phone conversation went something like this.
“I don’t believe that your product is distributed to my area; is there a way I can still order some syrups?”
“Of course! We will gladly ship them directly to [...]
