Recipe Comparison - Scorpion Bowl

After completing this recipe comparison, I have come to many conclusions, but there is one that is indisputable. I will -never- get scurvy.

The Joy of Mixology

2oz light rum (used Cruzan)
1/2oz brandy (used Salignac)
2oz orange juice
3/4oz lemon juice
1/2oz orgeat (used homemade)

Sloe Gin

Friday was a momentous day in the Bay Area — venerable spirits provider John Walker & Co. received their long-heralded shipment of Plymouth Sloe Gin. As many of you are no doubt aware, there has been a cruel lack of the spirit in the States. And yes, I am aware that Hiram Walker et al. [...]

A Weekend of Libations in DC

I found myself planning a last minute trip into the depths of Washington DC this past Thursday. The last time I was in the city, I was but a wee pup, and the lures of spirit and food were but a flicker in my eye. Not this time, however. I fully intended [...]

Are You a Lurker?

It’s de-lurking day again! The day where all you shy, non-commenting imbibers get to introduce yourself and, if lucky, win yourself something. Last year we had an overwhelming number of new posters poking their heads out from behind the tiki bar. Can we do better this year?
How do you know if you’re a [...]

Recipe Comparison: Between the Sheets

My trip to Portland last year included several visits to Powell’s book store. For those who don’t know of it, imagine a used book store that stocked 5-10 new used cocktail guides nearly every day. Seriously. Cocktails for Two caught my eye, and unsurprisingly so. The cover features a Manhattan poised [...]

Recipe Comparison - Corpse Reviver #2

Little gives me more pleasure than extracting dusty, unappreciated bottles from my liquor cabinet and putting them through the gauntlet. I’d bet many of you have a mostly-filled bottle of Lillet Blanc hibernating amongst more frequented spirits. It comes out a few times a year, brings smiles to onlookers, and then resumes napping, [...]

MxMo Brandy - Pendennis

Marleigh, from over at SLOSHED! is hosting this fine edition of Mixology Monday. After trying a plethora of brandy cocktails and whipping up a couple of new tiki recipes, I decided to fall back on an old favorite.

Vintage Spirits and Forgotten Cocktails by Dr. Cocktail was one of the first cocktail books that found its [...]

Creole

I never gave the Old Waldorf-Astoria more than a glance after it came with a shipment of other cocktail and cook books nearly a year ago. Boy what a mistake that was. I dug it out the other day, remembering it included more than a handful of gin-laden cocktails. To my surprise, [...]

Le Demon Vert

Gin is finding its way into more and more cocktails as fall turns to winter, and absinthe isn’t far behind. The lonely bottle of falernum sits idly in the refrigerator, begging me to make another tiki drink, but I’ve found other uses for it …

1 1/2oz gin (used Plymouth)
1/2oz absinthe (I used [...]

Are Drinks Seasonal?

A recent comment on my shrub post prompted me to post this question. To clarify if you haven’t seen the post, I’ll quote Martin, the owner and fine exotic cocktail scientist from Forbidden Island: “What’s all this #&%$* about tiki season fading? What are you, some kind of @#*&! communist?” I found this [...]
